In 438 AD, Lei Cizong of the Liu Song Dynasty gathered talented scholars from across the country to teach at the foot of Jiming Mountain in Jinling, establishing disciplines in literature, history, Confucianism, and metaphysics, marking the beginning of a grand academic tradition. In 1382, Emperor Zhu Yuanzhang established the Imperial Academy (Guozijian) on this site, making it the highest educational administrative institution and the premier academy of the Ming Dynasty. In 1902, the renowned educator and Governor of Liangjiang, Zhang Zhidong, founded Sanjiang Normal School on this historic site, which marked the origin of Southeast University.

In 1916, during his tenure at Nanjing Higher Normal School, the renowned scholar Jiang Qian established the Department of Craft and Technology, specializing in mechanical manufacturing education. This initiative set a precedent for the establishment of engineering disciplines in normal schools across China and represents the origin oftoday's School of Mechanical Engineering at Southeast University. In 1921, Mao Yisheng took charge of the Engineering Department at Southeast University and established the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The school has since evolved through the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Central University, the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Nanjing Institute of Technology, and finally the School of Mechanical Engineering at Southeast University, bearing witness to the historical journey of mechanical engineering education in China.

Over its history of more than one hundred years, the school has adhered to the ethos of"simplicity, diligence, and truth-seeking" from its early days and embraced the university motto of"Strive for Perfection." It has gathered renowned scholars, fostered a legacy of academic excellence, and cultivated a remarkable array of talents. Among its distinguished alumni are 16 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, including Ding Henggao, as well as prominent leaders in higher education such as Zhong Binglin, along with outstanding figures in politics, business, and overseas. The school has contributed over ten thousand outstanding graduates to the nation, many of whom have become pillars of society.

The sustained efforts and dedication of generations have laid a solid foundation for the vigorous development oftoday's School of Mechanical Engineering. At present, our faculty members carry forward a spirit of innovation, build on past achievements, and strive for continuous progress. We are fully committed to the fundamental mission of fostering virtue in education, with a focus on cultivating first-class leading talents who possess a deep sense of patriotism, a global perspective, and the ability to shape the future and contribute to humanity.
